Interview with Giovanni Venditti

Where are you from?

I am from a little city called Avezzano, located in the centre of Italy, although it’s almost one year that I live in Germany. At the moment I live in a little village exactly on the border between The Netherlands and Deutschland.

What is your style of photography?

Well, I guess that my style comes from all the movies I’ve been watching, especially during the college years, and all the images that come to my mind when I listen to songs. I always loved those movies that were produced after the second world war in Italy and directors as Federico Fellini or monumental actors like Marcello Mastroianni are the milestones of that movement (Neorealismo). Directors like Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, Luchino Visconti, and so on, they often didn’t even have the money to shoot “properly” or many times, so they got on the street, working only with what they had and with people that sometimes were not even actors. So my style is properly sticking to the concept of “reality”: showing what we see and dreaming of what it “could be”, instead of showing a dream and think in reverse about how depressing sometimes reality is.

What inspires you?

Everything I see around inspires me. People tend to forget how powerful real life is. An old professor at the University once said to me that a good writer must look at reality with prehensile eyes, capture what other people cannot see and elaborate the concept till it shines and creates the magic. This is the process of creative writing. Well, I believe this sentence suits perfectly also photography (which, in some way, I believe to be really similar to the art of writing). But if I  would have to pick only one thing, then it would be music. Music inspires me the most in the process of creating visual images.

Who influenced you as a photographer?

I don’t know exactly to be honest, but I guess it is in my dna. I come from a family where everybody is a bit on the artistic side. My father, when he was younger, was a photographer too. My cousin Alessandro  who traveled by motorbike from Argentina up to Brazil (reaching Salvador De Bahia), passing through countries like Perù and Chile, taking pictures of everything and everyone. His reportage from South America can be watched here www.alessandroparente.com . By coincidence, while he was doing this all over South America I was doing exactly the same thing in Europe, Most of the places I visited can be seen here www.myspace.com/giov_indieforbunnies . So, nothing inspires me and everything inspires me. It comes out when it decides to come out. I am just the arm that paints the final picture.

Apples, Germany, November 2010

What does photography mean to you?

I think is one of the most interesting ways of expressing human feelings. Taking a picture is like writing something on a piece of paper. And writing is something that speaks often to the most hidden part of yourself. If you make people think “Wow!” then that’s an achievement and it could mean the world to you.

How did you hear about this project?

A friend of mine while I was living in Greece told me “Hey, there’s this interesting project going on, I think you will like that!”. Damn right.
